Project Natal FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

There are a lot of questions circulating the internet regarding Microsoft’s new accessory for the Xbox 360, Project Natal. I hope to be able to answer some of them here in my Project Natal FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions).

Q: Is Project Natal the successor to the Xbox 360?
A: No. Microsoft has continually claimed that they think the Xbox 360 has a 10-year cycle (it came out in 2005) but since previous consoles had a lot shorter life span, this has caused some confusion. Project Natal is simply an accessory that will work with every single Xbox 360 that has been sold so far.

Q: Will Project Natal work with existing games?
A: This is another area that has sparked a lot of confusion, mostly due to the fact that a Project Natal Burnout Paradise video has been released, and so people began assuming that since Burnout Paradise was a previously released game, that other previously released games will be available for Project Natal use. That is not the case, as Kudo Tsunoda, the Creative Director for Project Natal has said, that existing games require a large rewrite of their code, which will not make it practical for them to release update packs to work with Project Natal. But, definitely expect some sequels to games, as well as annual sports games to come out utilizing Project Natal controls.

Q: Will Project Natal replace the controller?
A: No, Project Natal will not be replacing the controller. Some games will definitely be built to control the entire game without a controller, games that are specifically designed to be directly Project Natal games, but not every 360 game will be like that. I definitely see game developers, in addition to making Project Natal-only games, making games that both utilize Project Natal for only some parts, and some games that just won’t use Project Natal at all!
